How to Recycle and Dispose
of Oil and Latex Paint

Water-Based Latex Paint
  • Recycle latex paint by finding the closest drop-off site in your area that accepts latex paint for recycling and reuse and take it there.
  • Dried paint is not harmful to the environment. To dry out latex paint (1 inch or less) open the can until it dries. To speed up the process you can mix it with cat litter or sawdust in the can if there is a small amount or in a double-lined garbage bag for a large amount. Once dry, paint can go in the trash.
  • Donate your leftover paint to a neighbor, friend, family member, church, or civic/community group.
Oil-Based Paint
  • Oil paint is a household hazardous waste (HHW) and must be taken to an appropriate facility. Sites that accept latex paint may not accept oil paint.
  • Oil-based paint or paint that has the word "alkyd" on the label should be used up until none is left.
  • Use up any leftover paint by brushing onto old boards or newspapers in a well-ventilated place. Then the dried, painted wood and newspapers can go in the trash, along with the empty can.
  • Donate any leftover oil-based paint that is still usable.
